Let’s Discover New Cities: 24 Hours in Aalborg

-“Any nice plan for the weekend?”

-“Actually I am going to Denmark for a day!”

In the last two years I have been one of those crazy people who will take a flight on a Saturday morning and come back on the following day.

One of my resolutions for 2018 was to travel less but for a longer period of time…

…and then I did it again.

I just can’t help but jump at an opportunity to visit a new place, even for 24 hours. Yes, I know…what can you possibly see in 24 hours?

As usual, it’s all about planning… And you can always go back to explore more!

Aalborg is Denmark’s fourth largest city and it really surprised me.

Denmark, as per all the Northern countries, is notorious for being expensive when it comes to accommodation and food.

However, we luckily found a great and cheap AirBnb few minutes away from the city centre!

I simply love the sleek and cool Scandinavian interior design. I didn’t want to go back to my place in London!

As we head a very tight schedule,we quickly left our luggage, freshened up and headed to the city centre for lunch.

There is a great Danish alternative to fast food chains: Nadias Sandwich, which features also a nice salad corner.

We then just strolled around the cobbled streets of the city centre, which is one of the cutest I have ever seen.

It is an architecture lover dream with its pretty houses, shops and churches.

We stumbled across a very artsy corner with different ceramics; I honestly don’t know if it was a shop’s exhibition or simply street art.. but I loved it.

There is also pretty impressive street art!

WHAT NOT TO MISS:

The Underground Museum

That’s right, this lift is the museum entrance.

You just pay for the ride, therefore if there are many people the cost is close to zero.

You will find impressive ruins of a Franciscan monastery, skeletons from the cemeteries and other findings from the city of Aalborg’s Viking and medieval past.

I totally recommend it!

The Singing Trees

What makes this park different from any other in the world?

Every tree represents a singer and you just need to hit a button to listen to some of its music!

This a very original idea and I guess that it is quite popular during summer to have picnics and hang around trees to listen to music!

At this point you will need a break and we found this very quirky cafeteria called Penny Lane which has great cakes and sells everything that you see, including plates and mugs.

It is also very pleasant to walk around the harbor.

Nightlife:

Jomfru Ane Gade, known also “The Street”, is the area locals head to for drinking and partying.

It is full of young students so we had dinner and went for a drink to a different pub around the corner with live music.

The following morning it was already time to leave for the airport.

It was the less stressful journey I have ever experienced in my life: you simply catch the bus 70 or 71 from the city centre and 12 minutes later you are already at the check in area!
